One is a Snail and Ten is
a Crab
Grade 1 has been working on
making numbers during Math. We have been
reading the book, One is a Snail and Ten
is a Crab, written by April Pulley Sayne and Jeff Sayre. Students have been working on creating numbers using feet to represent those numbers.
When asked how they were representing 14, R said to make 14, “We need 1 crab, and a
snail and a dog.”
N said, “We need a crab, a snail, a snail,
and a person.”
When asked about what else the books tells
us about numbers, B said, “It helps you make the numbers.” N said, “Snail is 1, and a person is 2 and an insect
is 6, and two snails is 2. A dog is a 4.”
O said, “A spider is 8. A 9 is a spider and a snail.”
C said, “A crab is 10. A insect is 6 and two persons is four and
three snails is 3. One snail is 1 and a
5 is a dog and snail.”
Students are creating and making meaningful connections to math. Students are excited to start math everyday and are looking forward to creating their own math books using these animals.
